Born as Geraldine Miller in Benson, Minnesota, Geri is her preferred name, as she likely wouldn’t respond to her full name. She was born to Theodore and Ragna Skarsten Miller and grew up with five siblings—four brothers and one sister. One of her brothers has passed away, but the rest of her siblings still live in Minnesota, though not near Alexandria.
Geri married Lyle, whom she met through a college friend. Together, they had two sons, Kristian and Jeremiah. Tragically, their eldest son Kristian was killed in a school bus accident in Miltona when he was just 9 years old. Their surviving son, Jeremiah, lives in Brandon, Minnesota, where he works as a semi truck driver for Hilltop, a job he began at age 16 and continues today.
Geri’s husband, Lyle, passed away ten years ago after a brief, mysterious illness that lasted only three days. The cause of his death was never determined, but Geri believes he died of a broken heart. She finds solace in imagining Lyle and Kristian playing baseball together in heaven.
Throughout her life, Geri has enjoyed sports, having been active in softball, volleyball, and track since her high school days, and continuing to participate in sports after graduation. Her hobbies include gardening and spending time outdoors on her 20-acre property northeast of Carlos. She enjoys observing the abundant wildlife that passes through her yard, including deer, turkeys, and even the occasional bear and fisher. To help maintain her property without relying on her son, Geri has embraced battery-operated tools, receiving a battery-powered weed trimmer for Mother’s Day and a battery-powered chainsaw for Christmas.
Professionally, Geri worked in accounting for Central Specialties, handling payroll for 320 employees. She later became an accounting specialist at Brenton Engineering, where she worked until her retirement on July 2, 2021. Currently, Geri serves as the office administrator for Shalom Lutheran Church, where she enjoys interacting with the members throughout each week, continuing her commitment to serving her community with dedication and warmth.
